Local Journalism Initiative

Department of Canadian Heritage

The Local Journalism Initiative supports original civic journalism that covers the needs of underserved communities across Canada. Funding helps eligible Canadian media organizations hire journalists or pay freelancers. The content is shared through a Creative Commons license. A Changing Narratives Fund stream funds diverse journalists, including emerging journalists, and offers them mentoring and training.
